SOCIAL MEDIA: We are so Connected that We are Disconnected

Social media is a part of our everyday life. Most people use it every day without noticing how it affects their lives. Does social media connect us, or it disconnects us to the people close to us?

Social media is a place where it is easy to make friends, but in reality, how many are there? People nowadays choose to use virtual ways to connect to people because it hinders them from expressing their real emotions and can express anything without the worry of judgment. Before, connecting to the love ones that are away from you is hard, it can take days, weeks, or even months in order for you to send and receive a message. But, thanks to the internet, you can talk to them in just one click, and you can also see each other through the use of face time and video call. With the help of social media, you can find new friends, because it gives you a chance to communicate with strangers across the world.

Social media helped us a lot with interacting with the people that are far from us, but it disconnected us from the people who are close to us. Everyone is too busy using these social media platforms that they forgot that they have a life outside this virtual world. I can relate to the person that Ms. Sherry Turkle described on the Flight from Conversation where "young people who have grown up fearing conversation show up on the job wearing earphones." Similarly, when I go to a place wherein I don't know anyone, I pretend to use my phone to avoid a conversation from anyone.

We need to know how to use this media properly. We should not abuse it, and we should be able to distinguish what is real and what is not. Learning how to balance the real world and the virtual world will help us become a competent media user.

  1. I can also relate with what you've said that in order to avoid conversation in a crowd wherein you don't know anyone, just pretend that you are using your phone. I just realized that we really are slowly disconnecting to the real world and just connecting to what technology can give.

  8. Indeed, modern technology made us more connected. But because of how immersed some of us in using it, we became disconnected to reality. It is really important for us to know the that conversing face to face is still
valuable and can build solid connection than anything.

  13. Social media may connect us to tons of people online but too much use of it will disconnect us to the people around us. I agree that we should really use media properly and fruitfully to fully utilize the very purpose why it was created.
